2025 Canadian GP Roundup as Mercedes Claim First Victory of The Season

George Russell claimed his first race win of the 2025 season and the 4th of his career. After an impressive lap in qualifying, the Brit didn’t drop a sweat on his way to victory. Before the start of the 2025 Canadian GP, fans were excited about the first-lap confrontation between him and Verstappen. However, there were no fireworks this time, but there was plenty of drama at the back end at the start of the race.

The race wasn’t one of the best this season, but not the worst this year. The softer tire choice from Pirelli has helped with different strategies that have made things unpredictable. Let’s look into the winners and losers of the 2025 Canadian GP.

Winners of the 2025 Canadian GP

1.    George Russell

George Russell had a near-perfect weekend at  Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve in Canada and capped it with an impressive race win. The Mercedes struggles in hot conditions, and the cold conditions of Canada helped the car. The British driver didn’t have to sweat defending and continues his impressive performance in the 2025 F1 season.

2.    Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen is back in the World Championship race after an impressive 2nd place in Canada. The reigning champion, who has a race ban looming over his head, had a great weekend. Not a victory that he’d hoped for, but the best result for the Dutch driver.

3.    Kimi Antonelli

Kimi Antonelli became the third youngest podium finisher in F1 history. After an above-par qualifying session, the 18-year-old capitalized on the first-lap melee to overtake Oscar Piastri. The Italian driver not only held 3rd place but also put a lot of pressure on Verstappen.

Losers of the 2025 Canadian GP

1.    Lando Norris

Lando Norris once again crumbles under pressure after crashing out in the race, chasing his teammate. After a poor qualifying session, the Brit recovered to 5th in the race and was attacking his teammate. However, all his efforts went in vain after he crashed into his teammate. A good thing in all this is that Norris was quick to acknowledge that the crash was his mistake.

2.    Ferrari

Ferrari is getting back to basics after consecutive pole positions in the past 2 races. Charles Leclerc underperformed in qualifying, where he could’ve competed for the front row. Leclerc had a solid race and finished 5th after starting 8th in the race. However, he was disappointed with the team, as he had wanted to go for a one-stopper, but the typical Ferrari strategy ruined his race. Lewis Hamilton had an excellent qualifying session; however, his race trim was not on par with his teammates and competitors.

3.    Yuki Tsunoda

Adding Yuki Tsunoda to this list is becoming boring, and everyone has forgotten him at Red Bull. He didn’t have the best qualifying sessions; however, as his luck has been, he got penalized for overtaking during a red flag. The Japanese driver showed some glimpses during the race but finished 12th as the chequered flag was raised.

4.    Williams

The Spanish GP was a bad weekend for Williams if you go by this season. In Canada, it was expected that the team would be back to lead the midfield. Everything looked good in Practice; however, when qualifying started, the team and the drivers were left puzzled. The car was quick in the race, but an overambitious Albon, coupled with an engine failure, capped a dreadful day for the team.
