Winners and Losers of the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix

Lando Norris claimed an emphatic victory in the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix after holding off his teammate for the lead. Norris, who is his harshest critic, had a commanding weekend and proved his doubters wrong.

The race saw a tense battle between him and his McLaren teammate. Many expected that this could end up in another Canada-like situation, but that wasn’t the case. With this victory, Norris closed the gap in the championship to 15 points.

In stark contrast, Max Verstappen’s title hopes are all but over. After being taken out of the Austrian GP, it is hard to imagine Verstappen going after the Papaya team. Let’s look into the winners and losers of the Austrian Grand Prix.

Winners of the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix

1.    Lando Norris

Norris got a much-needed victory in the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix. After heartbreak in the Canadian GP, this was a needed boost for his push in the drivers’ championship this year. After sitting out in FP1, Norris looked phenomenal throughout the weekend. The Brit put in an impressive lap in qualifying and claimed a dominant pole. Throughout the race, he looked in control and used his racecraft to keep his teammate Piastri at bay.

2.    Ferrari

Ferrari had the strongest weekend of the season in qualifying as well as the race. The prancing horse wasn’t in contention for victory. But they had the best finish this year with 3rd and 4th place. While Leclerc was 20 seconds from Piastri, they were the second-fastest car this weekend in Austria. This has helped them to reclaim the second position in the constructors from Mercedes.

3.    Gabriel Bortoleto

Gabriel Bortoleto enjoyed his first points of his F1 career. After reaching Q3 for the first time on Saturday, the rookie finished 8th in the race. He narrowly missed 7th place against his manager, Fernando Alonso. Alongside this, Hulkenberg finishing behind him, capped an impressive weekend for Sauber.

4.    Liam Lawson

Liam Lawson has not had the best of years in 2025 after getting demoted by Red Bull. However, in Austria, the Kiwi finally looks set for redemption after an impressive 6th place. This was the best result for a Red Bull car in the Red Bull Ring. With this result, Racing Bulls jump ahead of Haas in the constructors’ standings.

Losers of the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix

1.    Williams

Williams will want to forget the Austrian GP weekend. Both their cars had a horrible Saturday, and Sunday wasn’t much better. While Sainz couldn’t even get on the start grid after his car was engulfed in fire in the pits, Albon retired due to overheating. The team will hope to get their early-season form and luck back on their side going into the British GP.

2.    Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen has had a horrible weekend going into the race. The Dutch driver, starting 7th, had an excellent getaway but was wiped out by Antonelli on the first lap. This was a major dampener for his title charge, and he is now 61 points behind the lead in the world championship. Now, with 13 races left, it’ll be hard for the reigning champion to get ahead of the McLarens.

3.    Kimi Antonelli

Kimi Antonelli grabbed his first podium finish in the Canadian GP. However, just a couple of weeks later, the Italian driver caused a major shunt and crashed out of the race. After a difficult Saturday, Antonelli was too ambitious going into the third corner and collected Verstappen, and out of the race, he went.

4.    Yuki Tsunoda

Yuki Tsunoda continued his struggles in the Red Bull and finished 16th in the Austrian GP. The Japanese driver looked off the pace throughout the weekend and never looked like he’d get into the points. However, his clash with Colapinto meant that his misery would be compounded further.
